Vickery Meadow Tutoring

The Vickery Meadow After School Program

After the first group of SMU students returned from The Urban Plunge: Who is my Neighbor? experience, they decided to attempt to do something about one of the biggest needs in the neighborhood:  education and mentorship for the youth.   Small groups began tutoring and mentoring the refugee children of Vickery Meadow.  Today SMU Catholic partners with Catholic Charities to provide a structured and consistent after school program for the children.  During the week, volunteers get involved by teaching the kids English and Reading, leading them in art projects that also integrate critical life skills, coaching and playing soccer and guiding as small group mentors. The SMU students serve as the volunteers that keep the program alive and flourishing.  Their experience as volunteer is rooted in the Social Teachings of the Catholic Church, as students are provided with opportunities to process, reflect on and integrate their experiences, through group gatherings and one-on-one meetings.
