The Urban Plunge Experience: Who is My Neighbor?
An immersion experience of faith and action, the Urban Plunge invites students into an experience of social justice through displacement, compassion, solidarity and action. The experience consists of a four day immersion into the heart of Vickery Meadow, only five miles from SMU and home to over 10,000 refugees from countries like Napal, Burundi, Bhutan, and Burma. Students are invited to live alongside and build relationships with the people there. Students prepare for the trip through a series of pre-trip meetings to learn, pray, and reflect on issues relevant to the people of Vickery Meadow: poverty, citizenship, housing, education, and health care. Rooted in Catholic Social Teachings, the program teaches students to adopt a see-judge-act model of service: opening to relationship with others first, growing in solidarity with them second, and then deciding on a course of social justice action.
Urban Plunge 2012 will be held October 13-16! Registration is now open and will close on September 21.
